VeggieCityDC is a pop-up farmers market bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to food desert neighborhoods. Our 17-week market operates from June 7th, 2019- September 27th, 2019, 1pm-7pm every Friday at the Marvin Gaye Recreation Center at 15 61st N.E., Washington, DC 20019.
We offer a great selection fresh and affordable fruits and vegetable products directly to food desert residents for purchase, while bringing the community together with live stage performances and hosting free healthy lifestyle workshops to help residents sustain their healthy eating habits far after their farmers market visit. Inner-city DC SYEP Summer Youth workers ages 16-24 will work at the market in Customer Service, Stage Crew Assistance or Produce Stand departments to gain meaningful job experience in the food industry & learning civic engagement. Youth being involved in a productive activity every Friday can deter them from juvenile delinquency & crime this summer.
We are excited to help increase food access to residents living in DC food desert neighborhoods. Our market will remove the shopping constraints of seniors, expecting mothers, families and residents who don't have easy access to a grocery store.
To make the farmers market a success we want to involve residents and community stakeholders in helping to make VeggieCityDC a success for the community this summer!
